 When Jesus is lifted up

'When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to Myself' (John 12:32). Jesus was saying through death, not through life, He will draw more people to Himself than He could by living. If Jesus was to die, it was not because of His wrong doing; not because of old age, as He was only 33 when He died; not because of sickness, as He had no sickness; He was to die for a purpose: His death was to have a significance which would affect the whole world. In His death He would pay the price of our sin for all time.

'Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him' (v37). In the previous verse Jesus says that when He dies everyone will recognise Him, not because of His life but because of His death. Then the Bible says, when Jesus worked the miracles many didn't believe in Him. The only way we can recognise God is through the miraculous. Miracles still challenge every one of us today as to whether we believe in God or not. The very death and resurrection of Jesus is a miracle which demands a response from all who hear the Good News. 'Even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father' (John 10:38). My own life is the evidence of the miraculous power of God: twice He has healed me of cancer - I had no treatment and no operation, just the miracle working power of God.
