David Hathaway
A VISION AND A MINISTRY FOR 60 YEARS

Name: David Hathaway
Title: Minister and Evangelist

David Hathaway – Founder and President of Eurovision Mission to Europe, Editorial Director of Prophetic Vision magazine – is an International Evangelist who has ministered worldwide for 60 years. Today he reaches millions through his Live-TV evangelism in Russia, Siberia, Ukraine and Europe and through his weekly worldwide Power of Faith TV broadcasts.

His 2004 Russian Easter TV broadcast was viewed by 10 million in 7 broadcast regions. In 2005, he held the largest crusade in Europe, reaching over 101 million in Russia, 50 million in Ukraine, and 7 million in China. Today the broadcasts are even more effective – in 2006 a free-phone call centre was introduced to enable the viewers to freely respond to the broadcasts – in the first nine months over 100,000 people had telephoned! During the 2007 Russian Christmas a special celebration was broadcast – 46,106 people responded by phone – with 95% repenting.

In 2007 we signed a 12 month TV contract to broadcast the evangelism on Das Vierte (the equivalent of UK Channel 4) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on secular TV. As a direct result of these programmes, CNBC Europe – one of the world’s largest business and news broadcasters – approved our Gospel programmes for broadcast. The programmes are shown in three languages – English, Russian, and German.

In September 2008 David held one of the largest conferences and crusades ever in the Baltic States. Every day we saw thousands commit their lives to Christ in the Saku Arena, Tallinn, Estonia – the first Christian event ever held in this large arena! This crusade was followed in October 2009, by what is possibly the largest crusade ever held in Europe - the evangelism in Vilnius, Lithuania, was supported by all the denominations.

A Vision and a Ministry for 60 years

David has always chosen to live on the edge, in the danger zone, to take amazing risks for God …miraculously released from a communist prison, healed of cancer twice, almost killed on five occasions. Through this and many other miracles, he is proving that life with Christ is a continually unfolding adventure. David says he would rather be in a storm with Jesus than live at peace without Him.

After 10 years as a full time pastor and evangelist in Britain, David’s work in Russia and Eastern Europe began in 1961 when he organised the first ever modern overland expedition to Jerusalem, travelling behind the Iron Curtain through the Middle East countries and into Israel. He had heard that there was to be a World Pentecostal Conference in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, so full of expectation, he determined to be there! He had no money to go, but was challenged to do the impossible, set up an expedition and go by road!

Everyone, from the motoring organisations to the British Foreign Office, said it was too dangerous: in addition to the hazards of crossing the Iron Curtain countries, on unknown roads, without suitable hotels – in Turkey they could be killed by bandits, and in Syria shot as spies – and it was impossible at that time to make the two way crossing by road in and out of Israel!

The successful overland expedition to Israel generated so much interest amongst Christians that David was almost forced to set up his own travel company to Israel – Crusader Tours. With official licences to travel all over Eastern Europe, it was whilst crossing communist Europe that David saw the desperate spiritual need caused by communism. This new direction in his life was precipitated in 1964 by a miraculous healing from throat cancer! David began smuggling Bibles in a secret compartment on his tour buses – he could take in two tonnes of Bibles every time! But in 1972, after taking in over 150,000 Bibles and New Testaments, David was stopped at the Czechoslovak border with 5000 Bibles destined for Russia. He was arrested, tortured and sentenced to five years in prison – then another five years for continuing to share his faith inside the prison!

In answer to his prayer, God showed him the day of his release and after ten months’ in prison, British Prime Minister Harold Wilson came personally to Czechoslovakia and brought him out on that exact day! This second miracle and his experience with God in the prison meant that before returning to work in Eastern Europe, David told his story around the world – many gave their lives to Christ.

After his miraculous release from prison, David’s heart continued to burn for Eastern Europe, the last words of one of his fellow prisoners ringing in his ears, “David, don’t forget us. No one knows, no one in the West cares.” In 1976 he organised the successful worldwide campaign for the release of Georgi Vins, a renowned Russian pastor from Kiev, sentenced to long years in a Siberian prison for his faith. David also continued to go into the Underground Churches to preach until eventually in the 1980’s, he began openly to evangelise and hold conferences in the communist counties.

In 1986 David believed that the Iron Curtain which had separated East and West Europe for so long would fall, and that a new great move of faith would sweep across the whole continent, uniting East and West. So in 1988, when it was still impossible, David held an ‘East-West’ conference in Karlsruhe, West Germany: 4000 delegates came to the first conference – and six hundred came from the East through the Iron Curtain! David held a second East-West conference in West Germany in 1989, again publicly stating his belief that the Iron Curtain would fall. Six hundred again came from the East – and within a few days of the ending of the conference, the Iron Curtain began to fall!

This was the beginning of a new powerful and life-changing vision for Europe – first the opening of the Iron Curtain – then holding meetings in stadiums in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania – followed by the first conferences in Ukraine, Siberia, and now all over Russia.

In just the first ten years of freedom after the East-West conferences, David personally held over three hundred conferences and meetings in the former Soviet countries with hundreds of thousands of people coming to know Jesus Christ.

In 1995, David launched Prophetic Vision magazine. Eleven years later, the magazine is distributed to over 130 countries and has a readership of over half a million – one of the largest Christian readerships in the world!

Then in 1998, as a direct result of an organised armed attack on David in Ukraine, intended to stop him ever preaching there again, Eurovision International TV Company was formed. David was not shot as had been planned. To maximise publicity after the attack, and hopefully see the return of his stolen vehicle and its contents, David called a press conference. Amazed by the positive response both in the press and on TV, David saw that if the authorities wanted to stop him holding meetings in auditoriums and stadiums, he could reach the whole nation through the media – every home has a TV set as part of the old Soviet propaganda system.

David Hathaway’s weekly broadcast, The Power of Faith, is well received by the viewers, by the local authorities and by the local TV companies in Russia and Ukraine. In Ukraine the programme is broadcast weekly to the whole nation on National TV.

In 2002, David saw a new way to reach Russia: continuing to work with the local churches, taking a sport-hall/stadium – AND to buy air-time on TV, to broadcast the whole meeting live, reaching the entire region – between 1 and 5 million every time – via terrestrial TV – direct into every town, every village, every home, every apartment – using the TV system set up by the communists for propaganda!

Outside the big cities, in the regions, there are usually only one or two TV channels, so that the programme has a great impact: the majority of people within the whole region, if they switch on their TV, will see the programme – many come to the churches as a result. In the Mukachevo region of West Ukraine, the television company estimated that 90% of the one and a half million population watched the broadcast in March 2003. So many people called the TV Station afterwards, that the TV Director re-broadcast the programmes five times, FREE!

Following the launch of the Live-TV broadcasts, David was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was faced with a personal challenge: does he really believe God or not? The doctors fast-tracked him into a process which would lead to an operation to remove part if not all of his right lung. The challenge for David was: how can he go back into Russia and say that God is the God of the impossible, a mighty God who has got power to change lives and heal cancer, if half of his lung is cut out?

On the Monday David was in the hospital, tubes down his lung – the doctors were looking for the cancer – but God had already given him the answer, he knew it was gone! The doctors looked at him in amazement – they were shocked – and said, “You have NO cancer!” David has the ‘before’ and ‘after’ X-rays!

In April 2005 we held the largest crusade ever in Europe, reaching over 101 million – that is 80% of the viewing audience – in Russia! Plus all Ukraine, 50 million – plus Russian-speaking populations worldwide via CNL, including Europe and the Baltic States! And 7 million in China!

Today the Live-TV Broadcasts have a bigger impact than ever, making use of the free-phone system just recently introduced into Eastern Europe – in the first nine months over 100,000 people had telephoned! During the 2007 Russian Christmas a special celebration was broadcast – 46,106 people responded by phone – with 95% repenting.

Many of our meetings are also combined with a humanitarian aid programme to alleviate the extreme poverty that stills affects major sectors of the population in these former Soviet countries. Every meeting has a follow-up programme, where we support the new converts through the ministry of the local churches – with New Testaments, Bible Correspondence Courses, and follow-up campaigns in halls and on TV.

Czech-Mate: David's Bible Smuggling

Czech-Mate: David's Bible Smuggling

For years David Hathaway smuggled Bibles across Communist borders to Christians in the former Soviet Bloc. At first, he took a few copies on trips with tourists. Later, using a specially designed coach, he was able to take up to 5,000 Bibles or 10,000 New Testaments at a time.

He had delivered more than 150,000 before he was eventually arrested on Midsummer's day 1972 at the Czech border. In a widely reported case, he was held, tried and sentenced.

In answer to prayer, God showed him the exact day of his release and, after ten months in prison, by a miracle God sent the British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, to bring him out! This miracle and his experience with God in the prison meant that before returning to work in Eastern Europe, David told his story around the world, leading more than a quarter of a million people to Christ in just two years.

After his release from prison, David's heart continued to burn for Eastern Europe, the last words of one of his fellow prisoners continually ringing in his ears: 'David, don't forget us. No one knows, no one in the West cares.'

60 years of ministry: 1950-2010

60 years of ministry: 1950-2010

David was born in London, the younger twin son of Rev and Mrs. WG Hathaway and dedicated to the Lord as a baby by George Jeffreys, the founder of the Elim Pentecostal Churches in Britain. At the time, David’s father, a great Bible teacher, was working with Jeffreys to establish these churches.

As a boy of 15, David was on holiday with some friends in Brighton, when one Saturday night, walking alone along the beach, he felt God begin to speak to him. He knew that God was calling him. You may ask, was he called as an evangelist, called as a pastor? No! God simply put His hand on David’s life and said, “I want your life, everything, not just an hour, not just a day. I want everything.”

At age 18, whilst still in Bible College (acceptance letter in gallery), David pastored his first church in Dorking, Surrey. After 11 years as a full-time pastor and evangelist in Britain, David’s ministry to Russia and Europe began in 1961 when he organised the first ever post-war overland expedition to Jerusalem – through the Iron Curtain countries. Out of this experience, David began smuggling Bibles into Russia and Eastern Europe until, in 1972, he was arrested, tortured and imprisoned in Czechoslovakia. – Visit the Czech-Mate image gallery to see pictures.

The miracle of David’s release and his experience with God in the prison meant that during the following two years he ministered around the world, leading more than ¼ million people to Christ, before returning to work in Eastern Europe. Bible smuggling changed into active, then open evangelism with multitudes repenting, with signs and wonders following, even under communist rule!

During the 1980s David travelled all over Europe – Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, even back into Czechoslovakia – often with John Osteen from Lakewood Church, USA, and regularly with the anointed music ministry of Vinesong. In 1985 David held a series of powerful meetings in Hungary – he got permission to minister in Catholic Churches, which were not only packed, but hundreds were standing outside! – News spread by word of mouth until in Budapest, the Catholic Cathedral was totally packed, five thousand attended!

In 1986 David felt challenged to hold a great East-West conference in Karlsruhe, West Germany. This, he did in 1988. Four thousand attended, but the miracle was the six hundred who crossed through the Iron Curtain from every communist country. In total four East-West conferences were held: 1988/89 and again in 91/92.

Following the collapse of the Iron Curtain, the programme of crusades and conferences intensified. Everywhere we saw the Power of God fall, just has God had promised, in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Ukraine. Amongst the most memorable in the early years was the EuroVision Conference we held in Debrecen, Hungary, in May 1990. For the first time in the history of Hungary ALL the churches joined in unity to support the evangelism. We shall never forget the dramatic and exciting crusade we held later that same year in Bulgaria before communism finally collapsed in 1991. The sports hall was packed not only for the evening meetings with 7000 crowded in, but even the morning and afternoon sessions were full with people hungry for the Word of God.

These meetings were followed by evangelism in Ukraine – also before the collapse of communism there – and which culminated in the first ever Christian meetings in the Dynamo Stadium in Kiev. In 1994, God gave David a vision to hold a series of great crusades in Siberia – for the full story read his book ‘Why Siberia?’ – Available in the online shop.

This programme of evangelism expanded again in 2002 with the inroduction of the Live-TV Evangelism - preaching in a sports hall/stadium and buying time on TV, broadcasting the whole evangelistic meeting live, reaching the entire region via the ordinary, secular TV!

The vision continues to grow. David says, 'I will not stop until we reach the whole of Russia and Europe with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It takes revoluntionary faith that will overcome every challenge. But with God and your support we can do it!'

Celebrating 60 Years in Ministry: 'What matters most to me is to finish what God started' (Acts 20:24, The Message Bible)

Bishop Mikhail Kindruk worked with David in the early 1990s to evangelise Siberia. He wrote: 'Your desire to spread the good news have installed in many people of Siberia and the Far East, a new wave of the presence of His power. I remember your fiery evangelistic preaching accompanied by God's power. By this message I wish to testify about the wonderful presence of God's power on all the crusades which you organised. For me personally it was an honour to organise and participate in the ministry.'

John Watson, founder of music group Vinesong, ministered with David on many occassions throughout Europe. These are his memories... 'Congratulations to David on his 60 years in ministry. David has always been a constant source of encouragement, motivation and inspiration to me. It is incredible how he is using the gift God has given him to reach the nations. The awesome experience we shared together as communism crumbled in Eastern Europe will never be forgotten and I am sure the angels in Heaven are still rejoicing. I remember one specific occasion when a whole city stood on the streets as we sang. The words beckoned the people to kneel and to our amazement everyone knelt as a stillness settled over the multitudes and we experienced the Presence of the Lord. ...The many EuroVision conferences that we shared with David and his team were, I believe, vital in what God was doing in the communist countries and Europe.'

Rev Michael Wieteska, Pastor of the Church of the Living Saviour, in Geneva, Switzerland, wrote the following tribute. 'Having come to the Lord in Australia back in 1964, I have met, and had the privilege to know some outstanding men of God from numerous nations since that time. I can truthfully say that the ministry God has entrusted to David Hathaway is second to none... It would take too many words to talk about all that God has done through him, but just read one of his books and you will begin to comprehend the length, width and depth of the ministry.'

Henry Modava, Pastor of Kiev Victory Church, was a student from Zimbabwe and studying in the former Soviet Union, when he acted as David's interpreter in the pioneer crusade meetings in Kiev in 1992 and 1993. When David preached in his church (February 2010), Henry said: "How many of you here have been in prison for your faith? Only David Hathaway, and it was not in his home country, but here in a communist prison!" He went on to recall the great crusades in Kiev in 1992 and 1993 and how the old communist ministers of Religious Affairs continued to harass and persecute David in Ukraine, until in 1998 gunmen were sent to attack him. They took his car and everything in it: - "It was a whole war against him! But David is the kind of man who came out stronger because of it!" Henry concluded: "David was an example to me. I thought if God can move through an Englishman, He can move through me, a black student from Zimbabwe."

Dodie Osteen, Co-Founder of Lakewood Church, Houston, USA, wrote in tribute: 'David Hathaway has been our friend for many years and is a man who is reaching people who seem to be unreachable. He has a heart for the world and was so respectful and loving to my husband. David considered John as a spiritual father. I salute him on 60 years in the ministry and know he has made Jesus proud.'

Bob and Ann Searle, Pastors of Oasis, Dwygyfylchi, wrote: 'We thank God for the multitude of souls that are and will be in Glory because David has been faithful to his calling. ...We eagerly await the future days when it's going to get even better!'
