Don't be afraid; only believe

'Jairus came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with Him to come to his house because his only daughter was dying... [But Jesus was too late, the daughter died], Jesus then said, "Don't be afraid; only believe"' (Luke 8:50).

There is a problem which has come into this man's life. He knows of Jesus; he's heard about Jesus' miracle working power; he believes in Jesus. Now Jesus is standing before him. Jairus falls down onto his knees and cries out, "Jesus, help me! My daughter is dying. Lay your hands on her."

But there is a problem. Jairus isn't the only one needing a healing touch from Jesus. The Bible says that so many people were surrounding Jesus that He was almost crushed by the sheer numbers, they all wanted something, they all wanted to talk to Him. A lot of them wanted healing. In particular, there was a woman who suffered a terrible condition; she had been bleeding for 12 years. The wonderful things about Jesus is that He didn't turn the woman aside; with Jesus there is no rejection: whoever you are, if you come to Jesus, He will not keep you waiting, He will not reject you or push you aside. He will not turn you away. Jesus had time: and He spent time with the woman. The result was, if you read on, He spent so much time with this woman, that the people from Jairus' house came running, they were saying to the ruler of the Synagogue, "It's too late; why did you take so much time? It's too late." They were in effect saying, "Jesus You're too late, there is nothing You can do!" They said to Jairus, don't trouble Jesus anymore, your daughter is now dead. That is how sick she was: when Jairus first came to Jesus she was in a desperate condition, now she had died. In the time that Jesus took, it became too late. They all thought even Jesus could do nothing now. 'Don't trouble Jesus, He heals the sick, He opens the eyes of the blind, yes, He works miracles, but now it is too late.' But Jesus was not too late!

Jesus overheard but ignored the comments of the servants, instead He spoke to Jairus and said, "Don't be afraid; only believe." Jesus went to Jairus' house, took the girl by the hand, spoke to her, and she was raised back to full health. Jairus believed for a healing, but Jesus wanted to work a greater miracle, He knew all along He would resurrect the girl.

If only we could hear the Words of Jesus: in your life, in your problems today, just where you are, Jesus wants to say the same thing to you, "only believe!"

We are in a spiritual battle: if miracles are the evidence of God, war is the consequence of the devil.
