Show us the Father

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:1-6, NKJV)

The book that outsells all the books I have written is entitled, ‘God is Your Father’. In John 14:1 at the Last Supper Jesus says, “You believe in God, believe also in Me!” The inference is here that the disciples believed in God, but they were still hesitant to believe in Jesus. But – who is God?! You know, so many people have such different concepts of who God is.

Here in John 14:2-4 Jesus begins to explain who God is. He refers to Him as ‘Father’ when He says, “In My Father’s House are many mansions – I go to prepare a place for you! And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know!”

But Thomas says, “Lord, we don’t know where You go, and how can we know the way?” Jesus makes a strange reply. He says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me. If you had known Me, you should have known My Father also.” Philip says, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus replied, “Have I been so long with you, Philip, yet you have not known Me? He that has seen Me has seen the Father! So why do you say show us the Father?!”

It can be hard to understand the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But in effect they are all manifestations of the One God. The Jews have a problem with the ‘Trinity’ because they believe so strongly in ‘One God’, and they think we believe in three. No, we don’t! Father, Son and Spirit are One. This is what Jesus is saying here when He says, “If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father.” People have such strange ideas of who God is! When we were boys, my older brother thought Heaven was ‘like sitting on a damp cloud with your feet in butter’! I don’t know where he got that idea from!!! But people imagine God as an ‘old man sitting on a cloud’!!! Or they don’t think of God as relevant at all. That’s why He sent His Son Jesus, that we might understand who He is! That’s why Jesus said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father!” They ARE One!
